GINGERBREAD COOKIES
1 cup shortening (like Crisco in the can—not liquid)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses
2 tablespoons vinegar
5 cups flour
1 ½ teaspoons soda
½ teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
- Cream sugar and shortening in large bowl. Beat in egg, molasses, and vinegar.
- Stir the dry ingredients together with a wire whisk( flour, soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and ground cloves)
- Chill dough for 3 hours (place in a baggie in the refrigerator)
- Roll dough 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured surface. Cut in shapes. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 375 degrees for 5 to 6 minutes. ( may take a little longer in oven)
- Cool slightly; remove and place on rack.
Makes about 5 dozen.
